The Book Talk's Take on Booktok

The Book Talk's Take on Booktok

Ruby D

Most of the world recalls the year 2020 as the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, the addition of the many popular Netflix shows, live-action Hamilton on Disney Plus streaming services, and the small but famously foreshadowed hashtag called “booktok.” It’s hard to gauge exactly how this all started, but it is quite evident that ooktok is going to be around for a while.

booktok is now a booming community on the Tiktok app where readers, authors, and general book lovers have come together to share their common passion for literature. Like any niche on Tiktok, there are different sides to booktok, which makes it all the more lovable and accessible to hundreds of different kinds of readers. There is also quite a range of content posted, like book recommendations, sharing one’s favorite quotes, or simple bookshelf tours. Some of my favorite booktok content creators are @rlybookshelf, @authortessabailey, and @.bookobsessed. I have been on booktok for about two years, joining the community right before it got the most popular it has ever reached. Although it seems like some stereotypical bookish platform, the booktok community continues to grow, now reaching a new peak of popularity. But with all this fandom, how much further can this hashtag grow?

The answer is plenty more, especially when it comes to the financial side of its effects. What most people don’t know is that booktok has directly helped boost the profits of many liked books on the platform, not to mention those authors having joined booktok makes it all the more special. Although with thousands of different authors and hundreds of different genres, conflict is apt to occur, that is, not on booktok. Despite everyone’s opinion, the community acknowledges their certain dislikes when it comes to books and that not everyone likes the same things.

For what it's worth, booktok simply wants to grow in itself and help other fellow readers expand their knowledge and interest levels in a safe and genuine community. If you have any interest in joining booktok…well it could never be easier. Simply download Tiktok and delve into the deep realm of booktok.  :)
